Chiapas – Retratos Rurales
Chiapas is a land of myth and natural beauty, which hosts the largest concentration of indigenous population of the Americas, its history is marked by brutal oppression and bloodshed that extends to this day. The reality of the modern Maya today is a subject that includes cultural and economic issues that afflict modern Indians who are in remote regions of Chiapas. One of the major contemporary issues is that related to the rapidly changing habits due to economic necesito and control of land. In the years 1950 and 1960, initially encouraged by the government, this migration between regions has led to conflicts related to land and increasing pressure on the resources of the rainforest, to stop the migration, the government decided in 1971 to declare a large portion of protected forest areas, but its strategy of “divide and rule” has led in time to great disaffection and tensions between population groups in the region. These portraits are evidence of the Maya in Chiapas today, offering a contemporary view of these native peoples.
